Hot off the press! Helen Day Art Center is thrilled to announce a new partnership with the MIT Museum, located in Cambridge, MA. We welcome you to explore When Art and Science Combine…A Makerspace in a Box in our new series of exploration boxes. What can you create using art and science together?

Each Box contains:

● All of the science and art tools and supplies needed to dive into to explore, investigate, discover, and create through two challenges!
● Resource guides to provide inspiration and information about the topics.
● Access to live webinars in which we will answer your questions and help you to brainstorm new solutions to the challenges. We may also explore some cool research and exhibits connected to the challenges.
● Instructions for sharing your creations with the world in the online gallery.


This series will consist of three makerspace boxes. Feel free to explore one, two, or all three boxes for $50 each!

● Box #1: Sculpture – Based on 2020 Exposed at Helen Day Art Center and inspired by artist/engineer Arthur Ganson’s kinetic sculptures at the MIT Museum

● Box #2: Photography – Based on Dona Ann McAdams: Performative Acts at Helen Day Art Center and the Physics and Photography Workshop at the MIT Museum

How can we use light to create art and learn about the world around us? In this makerspacebox, you will receive all the materials you need to use a camera or cell phone to capture and explore movement, the tiniest details of everyday objects, and create stunning photographic compositions with the physics of light. *Strobe light included; camera and cell phone not included

● Box #3: Origami – Based on the Knot Just Numbers Workshop at the MIT Museum

What do paper cranes, robots, and engineering all have in common? They have all been inspired by origami to create art and solve real world problems. In this makerspacebox, you will program your own self-folding robots, create 3D modular art, and more!

1. How do I get my When Art and Science Combine…A Makerspace in a Box

It’s easy - just sign up at https://www.helenday.com/online . Boxes will be shipped on the dates listed below to anywhere within the continental United States.

2. Is there a cost for the Box? 

Yes, each box costs $50.

3. When will I receive my box?

Box #1: Sculpture:
Register by: 7/12/20 or until supplies last.
Ships on 7/13/20

Box #2: Photography
Register by: 8/2/20 or until supplies last.
Ships on 8/3/20

Box #3: Origami
Register by: 8/23/20 or until supplies last.
Ships on 8/24/20

4. What do I get when I sign up...what’s in the Box?

Well, we’d like to leave some of that up for surprise, but you will get all of the supplies
you need to explore two unique challenges, access to help sessions with the MIT
Museum, and an online platform to share your work. A list of materials included in Box
#1 can be found here, in Box #2 here, and in Box #3 here.

5. Do I have to be a certain age to be able to do the project(s)?

Good question! The boxes are designed for children, adults, and families ages 7 and up.
The box contains small parts and is not for children under 3 years of age.

6. How will I know what to do when I open my Box?

Another great question! You will receive a guide to help you get started with your
explorations and creations as well as resources to help you along the way.

7. Do I have to be a scientist or artist to do the project(s)?

Are you curious? Great, that’s all you need!

8. Will I be able to check in with you since I’m doing this at home?

Yes, yes, that’s a terrific final question. There will be an option for you to hop onto a
Webinar with all the cool people at the MIT Museum. It’s a great way to connect with
your fellow scientists and artists to see what everyone is up to with their projects. And
guess what? You don’t have to wait for the Webinar to check in with us. We’re always
here for you to answer any questions or hear your ideas.

**Extra, Extra! When you have taken your time to thoughtfully design & complete your project,
you’ll be able to share it with everyone through an album created especially for When Art and
Science Combine…A Makerspace in a Box. The album will be available for viewing at
