Exposed 2019: Call to Artists

Helen Day Art Center in Stowe, Vermont invites artists to submit proposals for the 28h annual outdoor sculpture exhibition, Exposed, throughout the town of Stowe. The theme for this year will be text and symbols. Please submit work or proposals appropriate to this theme.

Lucas Cowan
Public Art Curator, Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, Boston

Lucas Cowan became The Rose Kennedy Greenway Conservancy’s first Public Art Curator in 2014. Previously, he directed the Public Art Program for the Maryland State Arts Council, and was the Senior Curator of Exhibits for Millennium Park and the Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture in Chicago, IL. He has curated and managed dozens of public art commissions and exhibitions of work by artists such as: Mark di Suvero, Jun Kaneko, Thomas Sayre, Shinique Smith, Sui Jianguo and Mehdi Ghadyanloo. Cowan has served on juries and panels across the United States, and has consulted on cultural park planning for cities such as San Francisco and Chicago. In 2016, Cowan was elected to the Americans for the Arts Public Art Network Council and previously served on the board of trustees for the International Sculpture Center. Cowan is a founding member of the Advisory Council for Cold Hollow Sculpture Park in Vermont, Madison Square Park Public Art Consortium, NY, Dean's Community Advisory Council at Lesley Art+Design, Cambridge MA, and the Punto Urban Arts Museum Advisory Board in Salem, Mass. Cowan attended the Maryland Institute College of Art where he studied Fiber and Material Studies and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago's Master Program in Arts Administration.


Samuel Adams

Koch Curatorial Fellow, deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, Lincoln, MA

Sam Adams is the Koch Curatorial Fellow at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum in Lincoln, MA. He holds a BA from New York University and an MA and PhD from the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, where he wrote a dissertation on postwar German theater production. His main research areas are feminism, performance, and installation art. He has taught modern and contemporary art history at Tufts University, Emerson College, and Northeastern University, and has held curatorial positions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Getty Research Institute, and the Institute of Contemporary Art/Boston. He is a contributor to ARTnews.--

Exposed 2019 Application Instructions

All applications must include:

1. Résumé

2. Project Images/Proposal

Provide an image or two of the work you would like to submit (either an image of the existing work or a sketch of the proposed work), and up to one page written description.

If the work is pre-existing, please note on the image description sheet which image(s) you are proposing. Sculptors may submit proposals for up to two pieces. Please specify at the top of the page if you are applying for placement of a sculptural work, site -specific work, or to collaborate with a business. Please describe how the work will be securely and safely installed. Provide as many details about the work as possible.

3. Images

Provide 10 digital images of past work, in jpeg format. Please number to correspond with the image description sheet.

4. Image description sheet

Please provide a corresponding image description sheet for the work you submit. Make sure to note if the images are of completed work or are sketches of a proposal specific to Exposed.

5. Application Form

Deadline for submission is March 15, 2019.

By submitting a proposal to HDAC for Exposed 2019, artist agrees to allow HDAC to use their material (text, images, biographical information, etc.) to promote the exhibition and Art Center activities.
