Clark Derbes 'Time Travelers and Shapescapes' at the East Gallery
![]() |
Clark Derbes’s “Shapescapes”* describe hypercubes (a four dimensional cube) made real. Though his style makes allusions to folk art, modernism and cubism, the rigor and finish evident in the work drive straight past history, engaging the viewer in his ideas and the sheer ‘WOW’ of its beauty. These painted, geometric, tromp l’oeil sculptures are seductive in their color and pattern. |

Derbes animates space with oblique angles bent to ninety degrees with deceptive grids on each face. Through his titles “Time Traveler (Portrait)” and “Time Traveler (Seated Portrait)” we infer that these forms are also characters in some fourth-dimensional narrative where nothing is quite as it seems. Clark’s Public Art School ©: For the last two years Derbes has been developing Public Art School © , a free online source for art lessons deeply rooted in his aesthetic, and imbued with his ‘make art anywhere - anyway’ ethos. His tightly edited video art lessons take place on the sides of tractor trailer trucks, abandoned sections of highway, or found boards -all to bright, rolling music selections. Artist? Yes. Perfomer? Yes. Art activist? Definitely. Follow Clark on... oh, never mind, just go make some art, anywhere, right NOW. |

The East Gallery at Helen Day Art Center
The Helen Day Art Center offers changing exhibitions, carefully selected by our guest curators and exhibitions director.
Our East Gallery gallery features the work of emerging artists from Vermont, New England and the Hudson Valley corridor of New York.
The Helen Day works to spread art knowledge in our community while awakening imagination in our future artists. Every year thousands of children visit our gallery. Shows are free to any school in Vermont who applies to a bus scholarship through our education department. We thank our supporters for this.
