EDUCATION
Letter to Educators
Dear Educators,
The Helen Day Art Center
invites you to join us for our Made In China Professional Development Workshop
that coincides with our Fall Exhibit, Made In China: Contemporary Chinese
Art.
Showing at the Helen Day Art
Center from September 19th-November 15th, this exciting
exhibit represents the first major exhibition of contemporary Chinese artwork
in Vermont. The perspective gained
from these creative works from leading Chinese artists is especially relevant
in the context of our increased intimacy with China and subsequent awareness of
Chinese culture, politics, and economics. This exhibit addresses how politics affect art in post-Maoist China, and
the role of artists in directing national identity in a time when personal
identity can finally be considered a legitimate quest.
The Professional Development
Workshop is designed for educators who would like to include a more
contemporary view of China in their classrooms, and who want to discover how
contemporary Chinese Artwork and society still has ties to ancient history.
Participants will be provided with information, resources, and inspiration for
integrating Chinese Arts and culture into their classroom curriculum through
lectures, discussions, and hands-on activities. This workshop will also include a rare opportunity to learn
about 20th century and present day China from visiting Chinese
teachers.
The workshop will include:
- A Curators’ Tour of the Made In China Exhibit
- Chinese History Lecture with Dr. Juefei Wang
– Former Director of the Asian Studies Outreach Program at the
University of Vermont and Former Executive Director of the Governor’s
Council on International Education of Vermont (for more about Juefei Wang

appreciate and understand the beauty of Chinese painting. Furthermore, you will
learn the basic brush strokes, the combination of water and ink, and the
amazing effect on Xuan paper. You will make your own art to keep and enjoy, as
well as for others to admire.
